About Alpenhof Lodge

Alpenhof has been part of Teton Village from the beginning, founded by Swiss-German owners who designed it to reflect the charm of traditional alpine inns. With just 42 rooms, we aim to blend the cozy charm of an Alpine lodge with the thoughtful amenities of a full-service hotel.

Historic Lodging

Jackson Hole’s Alpenhof Lodge

In the 1930s, American skiers embraced the romance of the European alpine lifestyle— importing everything from ski terms and yodeling to dirndls and loden jackets. Austrian instructors shaped the culture, and chalet-style lodges soon dotted U.S. ski towns. While many resorts moved on from that heritage, Alpenhof remains true to its roots. With its pitched roofs, carved balconies, and cozy interiors, it's a living tribute to the classic alpine inns of the Alps.

The Beginning

Alpenhof has been part of Teton Village since its beginning in 1965, when Jackson Hole first emerged as a world-class ski destination. Inspired by the alpine charm of Switzerland, founders Dietrich and Anneliese Oberreit built the lodge by hand, guided by their Bavarian roots and a dream of creating a warm, authentic mountain retreat.

As the first lodge in the village, Alpenhof quickly became a beloved destination for skiers craving European hospitality in the American West. In 1988, Ed and Susan Cunningham, lifelong travelers and Alpenhof regulars, took over and deepened its alpine spirit, blending tradition with thoughtful updates.

Today, Alpenhof remains a cozy, character-rich haven just steps from the slopes. With its painted woodwork, alpine décor, welcoming bistro, and old-world charm, it’s a rare gem in a world of modern resorts, still true to the spirit of the mountains.

Jackson Hole History

For guests interested in the deeper story of the region—from Native American roots to mountain men and early settlers—we recommend visiting the Jackson Hole Historical Museum in downtown Jackson. The museum’s two locations house rotating exhibits that bring the valley’s rich past to life.
